The 10 reasons that keep you from being more successful as a consultant
by Sourcingpro
Installing oneself as consultant is easy. Being successful requires you to master some very different competencies and abilities.
Let’s list and discuss what consultants say are the 10 most frequently occurring things standing in the way of success:
- Not enough expertise: Starting with limited or outdated expertise will drastically limit the missions you can accept and decrease the satisfaction of your customer. It will also negatively impact your image. This expertise can be expanded upon through education or additional missions, and it must be maintained and regularly updated.
- Image or expertise not recognized: Despite your expertise, the image and name or brand of a consultant is one of his primary assets. Most contracts or contacts are obtained thanks to this brand and image. When starting, or having a problem here, either you can build your brand and image through networking, social media, preceding missions and marketing, or you can rely on an existing and recognized brand that a company will maintain in all the marketing aspects.
- Limited network: Being able to rely on an extended network gives you a lever for your activities. It makes it easier finding new missions or coming in contact with the adequate person taking the decision about the assignments. This network should be preserved and continuously developed. A limited network restricts your potential opportunities.
- Lack of concentration on the function: During a mission, your main objective is to deliver to and satisfy the customer. Outside of this, there are still a lot of activities a consultant should do: work on his marketing, maintain his network and expertise, keep his financial and administrative obligation under control, update his knowledge and extend his expertise. All those activities heighten the tendency for you to dilute your concentration on your principal goal, and impact your image, future missions and eventual recommendations.
- Weak management of your financial or legal obligations or administration: Quite a few consultants are underestimating and considering these aspects less than they should. It can put you in very difficult situation, leading sometimes to the end of your enterprise and putting serious stress and pressure on your private life.
- Wrong contract or wrong missions: Don’t forget to cover your risk and don’t enter in a mission you cannot deliver. Avoid jeopardizing your future by accepting inappropriate and misunderstood contract terms and confirm you can deliver quality output.
- Limited commercial or marketing skills: Many skills are expected from a consultant outside his expertise. Two of the most important are the abilities to both market and sell oneself. Presenting, negotiating, publicity, a social media presence and editing skills are necessary to support your business. You can do this yourself or rely on a company you are partnering with.
- Not knowing where your position lies, lack of market knowledge: If you don’t know where your position is in terms of expertise or methods, or if you are out of the market in terms of conditions or fees, your competitiveness with others will decline. Monitoring these aspects is essential.
- Lack of personal development: Successful consultants should have a lot of competencies outside their expertise. This is even more true for who you are personally and characteristics you can demonstrate. Self-confidence, communication, structure, a problem-solving mindset, listening ability and assertiveness are all some of the expected attributes. Personal development through advising or coaching, for example, is essential for a sustainable and profitable career.
- Work–life balance: It is your source of energy and your mental wellness, and also a reason you work. Keeping a good work–life balance despite all the activities and subjects you need to take care of is not easy, but is necessary to be a top performer. Simplifying your professional life and reducing interfering activities is the most direct way to guarantee a work–life balance.
There is a lot to take care of to reach success but whether you are supported or isolated, avoid the preceding reasons and tackle all these subjects. An powerful way to tackle these risks, it to be supported. Read our article on the reasons and advantages to be supported and accompanied.
